Pitampura Shooting Raises Fresh Security Concerns in Delhi

Two unidentified men opened fire at the residence of Dubai-based businessman Sahil Jain, alias Google, in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura around 5 am on Wednesday, damaging a wall and a car parked outside the house, police said. No injuries were reported.

The incident took place in the Lok Vihar area, where the attackers arrived on a motorcycle before fleeing after firing several rounds. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Akansha Yadav said police had formed teams to analyse CCTV footage and examine the entry and exit points used by the suspects.

Police are also probing the possible involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Officials said Jain had received a threat from jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in 2021, and that a case related to the threat was registered with the Special Cell in 2023. However, police said there had been no fresh threat after that incident and that no one had claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s firing.

“There was no fresh threat after that. No one has claimed responsibility for the firing, and we are working on the intelligence,” Yadav said.

CCTV footage purportedly shows two men reaching the area on a motorcycle. The rider was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider had covered his face with a cloth, according to sources cited in the report. One of the men is seen getting off the motorcycle and firing at the property before both suspects leave the area.

The damage was limited to the exterior wall and the parked vehicle, according to the police account. The absence of injuries means the incident has not been reported as a physical assault, but the use of firearms in a residential locality has placed the investigation within the wider challenge of securing neighbourhoods and identifying offenders who can approach properties and escape quickly.

Police have not established the motive or confirmed whether the earlier threat and the latest firing are connected. Investigators are examining available intelligence, CCTV recordings and the suspects’ route into and out of the locality. The next steps will depend on identifying the two men and determining who ordered or carried out the firing.
