The Panvel-Karjat Suburban Railway Corridor, a transformative infrastructure project, has achieved a 67% completion milestone, promising a substantial enhancement in Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Spearheaded by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) under the ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III), the corridor is set for completion by December 2025.
The 28.3-kilometre double-line corridor between Panvel and Karjat aims to bolster connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), addressing the surging commuter demands. The project, with a sanctioned cost of ₹2,782 crore, is poised to reduce travel time and enhance commuter convenience significantly. All 56.82 hectares of private land and 4.4 hectares of government land required for the project have been successfully acquired. Engineering advancements have been notable, with 2 million cubic metres of earthwork completed and over 3,100 metres of tunnels excavated. Critical lining work across three tunnels is underway. The project’s structural development includes the completion of six major bridges and 29 minor bridges out of a planned 47.
Additionally, four Road Over Bridges (ROBs) have been constructed, with notable progress at key locations like Mohape and Kirawali. The Pune Motorway underpass is fully operational, awaiting minor finishing touches. Modern station infrastructure is taking shape at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat. This includes platform construction, foot overbridges, and administrative buildings. Once operational, the Panvel-Karjat Railway Corridor is expected to revolutionise suburban rail services, providing seamless and efficient connectivity across the MMR. By reducing travel time and enhancing infrastructure, the corridor will not only ease commuter woes but also contribute to the region’s economic and urban development. This milestone underlines India’s commitment to robust infrastructure projects that align with the growing demands of urbanisation.
