A 40-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her house and brought down a brick wall in Jenapur village of Odisha’s Puri district on Tuesday, as heavy rain and strong winds linked to an approaching cyclone affected the area.
The incident occurred around 9am in Jenapur village under Saripur gram panchayat in Astaranga block. The woman, identified as Lobhavati Muduli, was cooking inside the house when a nearby tree toppled onto the structure. The impact caused a brick wall to collapse, trapping her beneath the debris.
Villagers rescued Muduli and took her by ambulance to Astaranga for treatment. She was later shifted to Bhubaneswar, but she succumbed to her injuries in the afternoon, according to a report by The Times of India.
Her husband, Prashant Muduli, told the newspaper that she had been preparing food for their son when the wall collapsed. He said heavy rainfall had weakened the wall before the tree fell on it. The couple has three children, including two young daughters and a son.
The death highlights the immediate risks faced by households with weakened or vulnerable structures during severe weather. In this case, the wall’s reported deterioration under prolonged or heavy rain combined with the impact of a falling tree, leaving the family exposed to a compound hazard rather than a single weather-related threat.
Prashant Muduli works as a daily-wage labourer and was described as the family’s sole breadwinner. Following his wife’s death, he appealed to the government for financial assistance to support the couple’s children.
The incident took place while Odisha was experiencing heavy rain and winds triggered by an approaching cyclone. The report did not provide details of any compensation announced by the administration, structural safety assessment of the house, or action regarding the tree that fell on the building.
The family’s appeal places immediate attention on the support available to households that lose an earning member during a disaster-related incident. Any assistance will also need to account for the care and livelihood needs of the three children, particularly because the surviving parent depends on daily-wage work.
Further official details, including the administration’s response, any ex-gratia assistance and measures to assess damaged homes in the area, were not available in the supplied report.
