Hyderabad Police have launched a dedicated Zonal Investigation Branch in Golconda Zone to investigate serious and complex criminal cases separately from routine law-and-order duties, in a pilot intended to improve evidence-based investigations and speed up the filing of charge sheets.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar inaugurated the facility at the Golconda Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police office in Mehdipatnam on Tuesday, according to Telangana Today. The new branch will handle grave criminal cases registered within the zone and is designed to give investigators sustained time and resources to pursue them.
The specialised team comprises two Detective Inspectors, one Sub-Inspector, one Head Constable and 10 constables. Its creation separates the investigation of serious cases from the routine responsibilities handled by local police stations, including law-and-order duties, bandobust arrangements and crime-prevention work.
The move addresses an administrative challenge faced by local police stations: the same personnel are often required to investigate cases while also managing public order, security deployments and other operational duties. Under the pilot arrangement, the Zonal Investigation Branch will focus specifically on cases requiring more detailed and continuous investigation.
Sajjanar said the branch would coordinate with health officials, forensic science laboratories and other relevant departments. This coordination is intended to strengthen the use of evidence in investigations and support the timely filing of charge sheets in serious criminal cases.
The branch is also expected to reduce the workload on personnel at local police stations. Those officers will be able to concentrate on maintaining law and order and preventing crime, while the specialised team takes responsibility for investigations assigned to it within Golconda Zone.
The initiative places the quality and timeliness of criminal investigation within the structure of zonal policing rather than leaving all serious cases to individual police stations. Its initial rollout in Golconda Zone means the branch is currently a pilot, and the available announcement does not specify whether the model will later be extended to other zones or how its performance will be assessed.
The immediate focus will be on the branch’s coordination with forensic laboratories, health officials and other departments, along with its handling of serious cases and the timely submission of charge sheets. Hyderabad Police have not announced further details on the categories or number of cases that will be transferred to the new unit.
