Mumbai Airport System Outage Delays 327 Flights as Check-In Goes Manual

A Mumbai airport system outage disrupted flight processing on Tuesday evening, forcing staff to switch to manual check-in procedures while flight-tracking data showed 327 delays and an average departure delay of 50 minutes.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which operates the airport, said the facility experienced a temporary network disruption. In a statement, the operator said teams implemented manual processing measures to minimise inconvenience to passengers and maintain continuity of essential airport operations.

MIAL said there had been no overall impact on airport and flight operations due to the disruption. The operator did not provide specific details on the duration of the outage or identify the affected system. Sources cited in the report said the disruption lasted for more than an hour.

Data from the live flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed that 327 flights at Mumbai International Airport had been delayed by about 9.30 pm. Departures recorded an average delay of 50 minutes, while 13 per cent of flights were reported as cancelled. The report said it was unclear how many of the delays were directly linked to the system outage.

The incident placed manual procedures at the centre of the airport’s response. Manual check-in allowed staff to continue assisting passengers while the network disruption was being addressed, but the flight-tracking figures indicated that delays accumulated across the airport’s operations during the evening.

Mumbai airport is one of India’s busiest aviation facilities and serves as a critical transport gateway for the city, its surrounding region and connecting passengers. A disruption to passenger-processing systems can affect check-in, boarding coordination and the movement of travellers through the terminal, even when airport operations continue and flights are not fully suspended.

MIAL’s statement did not indicate whether the network disruption had been fully resolved, whether any passenger data or security systems were affected, or what caused the outage. The operator also did not provide a breakdown of affected airlines or flights.

The available information establishes that a temporary network disruption led airport teams to use manual processing, while flight-tracking data recorded widespread delays during the evening. Further details on the system involved, the outage duration and the number of delays attributable to it were not available in the report.
