West Bengal Invests Rs 3,967 Crore in Revamping 3,611 km of Roads for Better Connectivity

The West Bengal government has completed the repair, widening, and reinforcement of 3,611 kilometres of roads, with an investment of Rs 3,967 crore. This ambitious project is expected to significantly enhance road connectivity across both urban and rural areas, improving transportation efficiency and promoting economic growth.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Pulak Roy shared the developments in the state assembly on Wednesday, highlighting the completion of these extensive road upgrades. Additionally, sections of 7,765 kilometres of roads that had sustained damage were repaired at a further cost of Rs 207 crore, further showcasing the state’s commitment to improving its transport network. Among the most notable projects is the ongoing four-lane expansion of the Kalyani Expressway, a key route connecting Kalyani with Kolkata. The upgraded expressway is expected to alleviate congestion on the National Highway (NH-12), providing a smoother and faster transit link between urban centres and remote areas. Minister Roy assured the assembly that an alternative route via the state highway is already in use, helping manage the traffic in the interim period. The road improvements, part of the larger plan by the West Bengal Highway Development Corporation Ltd, underscore the government’s focus on improving both rural accessibility and urban connectivity. These changes are set to play a vital role in reducing travel times, ensuring safer roads, and enhancing overall mobility within the state. With several road projects nearing completion, the state’s transportation network is poised for a transformative change, enabling better economic integration and fostering long-term growth. These infrastructure upgrades also support the state’s commitment to boosting regional accessibility and ensuring that road safety becomes a priority for citizens across West Bengal.
