The Shahberi double-decker elevated road project in Greater Noida West has moved closer to the detailed planning stage after the Greater Noida Authority wrote to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to begin preparing a detailed project report and undertake related work. The proposed 2.5-kilometre, three-lane corridor is intended to improve traffic movement between Greater Noida and Ghaziabad.
According to Greater Noida Authority Chief Executive Officer Ravi Kumar NG, the elevated road will begin at Ek Murti roundabout and run towards the Shahberi drain. The section up to the drain is planned as a double-decker structure, while the route beyond it is proposed as a single-level elevated road.
The project is expected to cost around Rs 1,200 crore. The expenditure will be shared by the Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority and Ghaziabad Development Authority, with NHAI involved in the project’s development. The Greater Noida Authority has sent the proposal to NHAI, and work on the DPR is expected to begin soon, according to the report.
The planned corridor will connect the 130-metre-wide road in Greater Noida West through Shahberi and Crossings Republik to National Highway 9. The two elevated levels will serve traffic in opposite directions: one level will carry vehicles travelling from Greater Noida towards Ghaziabad, while the other will carry traffic moving in the reverse direction. The existing road is expected to remain open below the elevated structure.
The elevated structure is planned to be approximately 9 to 10 metres wide. In addition to the main corridor, the proposal includes another road along the Shahberi drain. This road is planned to connect near Tigri with a 60-metre-wide road and is also intended to improve traffic movement in Greater Noida West.
The proposal follows a change from an earlier plan for a four-lane elevated road. Officials from the Greater Noida Authority and NHAI held discussions last month, after which a double-decker configuration was considered with the assistance of a consultant. The earlier estimate for the project was around Rs 400 crore.
The proposed route is intended to address congestion affecting the rapidly urbanising residential areas of Greater Noida West and the Shahberi-Crossings Republik connection. The available project details do not specify a construction start date, completion deadline, land acquisition requirement or the final cost-sharing agreement between the three development authorities.
Separately, a 9.1-kilometre road being built between the Yamuna Expressway and the cargo hub of Noida International Airport is nearly complete but has not yet opened. The road is designed to allow goods vehicles to travel directly to the cargo terminal and reduce pressure on the Yamuna Expressway. Rajendra Bhati, general manager of the Yamuna Authority’s project department, said some work remains because the direct connection to the cargo terminal is not fully ready.
