Missing Road Railing Turns Vilayilmoola Crash Fatal

A 30-year-old man died after the two-wheeler he was travelling on plunged off a road section without protective railing at Vilayilmoola near Kadakkavoor in Thiruvananthapuram early on Monday, according to police. The incident has raised an immediate road-safety concern at a location where a vehicle leaving the carriageway had no barrier to prevent the fall.

The deceased was identified as Vijesh, also known as Unni, a resident of Anchuthengu. Police said he was riding the two-wheeler when he noticed a patrolling police jeep and allegedly accelerated. He subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road and plunged down from the unprotected section.

Police took Vijesh to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital after the crash. He succumbed to his injuries around noon, according to the report. His body was kept at the hospital and was to be handed over to his relatives after the postmortem.

Kadakkavoor Police have registered a case under provisions relating to unnatural death. The registration allows the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident to be examined while the investigation continues. Police said speeding may have contributed to the crash, but the exact sequence of events can be established only after a detailed investigation.

The road layout is a central element in the case. The vehicle did not merely collide with another road user or obstruction; it left the road at a section that, according to the police account, did not have a protective railing. Such barriers are intended to reduce the risk of vehicles falling from elevated, sloping or otherwise hazardous road edges, although the available report does not specify the height of the drop, the road design, the condition of the surface or whether any railing had previously been installed.

The incident therefore involves two questions that the investigation will need to distinguish: what caused the rider to lose control, and whether the road section had adequate safety protection for vehicles using it. The police account links the loss of control to alleged acceleration after Vijesh saw the patrol vehicle, but it does not establish whether visibility, road geometry, lighting, surface conditions or other factors also played a role.

No further official details about the road’s ownership, maintenance responsibility or any planned safety intervention were available in the supplied report. The next formal steps are the postmortem and the continuing investigation by Kadakkavoor Police into the circumstances of the crash.
