Jamia Protest Notice Escalates Campus Standoff Despite Poll Nod

Jamia Millia Islamia has issued a notice directing students and other people gathered at its North Campus to vacate the protest site, warning of disciplinary and legal action if they do not leave. The move came after the university agreed in principle to restore student union elections, but protesting students continued their agitation and demanded that an election date be announced.

The standoff at the Delhi university has continued for more than two weeks. According to the notice reported by Live Hindustan – NCR, the competent authority accepted the students’ demand in principle in the wider interest of the university and its students, and an official university order was issued on the matter.

The administration also said that most protesters had ended their hunger strike and withdrawn from the protest after the agreement. However, it said the campus had not been completely vacated. The notice stated that the protest and hunger strike were continuing at North Campus and that some people had remained at the site despite the university’s appeal to end the agitation.

The administration described the continued gathering as contrary to the terms on which the university order had been issued. It alleged that attempts were being made to keep the issue alive for private interests, and said that the presence of a crowd in the Gulistan-e-Ghalib building, which houses the departments of political science and economics, was unlawful.

The notice said the gatherings were disrupting the normal functioning of the departments. The administration also alleged that several locks in the building had been broken and that university property had been damaged. It further said that some former students were present inside the building or at other locations on the campus.

The university has given those present a final opportunity to leave the building and the protest site at Galib Lawn in North Campus without delay. It has also directed them to leave the campus. The notice warned that failure to comply would lead to disciplinary and legal action.

The dispute centres on the restoration of elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union. While the administration’s stated acceptance of the demand has addressed the issue in principle, the continuing demand for a specific election schedule has kept the protest active. The immediate operational question is whether the university can reopen affected departments and restore normal campus functioning without further escalation.

The next formal step identified in the notice is the evacuation of the Gulistan-e-Ghalib building and the Galib Lawn protest site. The university’s warning places responsibility for any further action on compliance with that direction, while the election date remains the key unresolved demand identified in the supplied report.
