Shanghai, known for its proactive adoption of emerging technologies in China, has recently unveiled its ambitious ‘Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of Manufacturing (2023-2025)’. The strategic initiative, announced by the Shanghai Municipal Government Office, highlights the city’s commitment to accelerate its digital economy’s growth through prioritising block chain, Web 3.0, and metaverse.
The plan underscores the pivotal role of these three cutting-edge technologies in shaping the future of Shanghai’s manufacturing industry. Recognising the significance of block chain and Web 3.0 in the next-generation digital economy, Shanghai aims to position itself as a global frontrunner in digital innovation and economic advancement by prioritising its development.
Another critical aspect of the plan is the establishment of metaverse, a virtual-reality space where users can interact within computer-generated environment and with each other. In line with this vision, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission recently released the ‘Shanghai Metaverse Key Technology R&D Plan (2023-2025)’.
This initiative focuses on critical technology dimensions such as content, computation, transmission and terminal technology, incorporating local and international industrial development trends. Furthermore, the action plan outlines Shanghai’s efforts to foster the growth of future industries, including the development of advanced industrial areas like Zhangjiang, Lingang, and the Bay of Large Zero.
