Delhi BS6 Vehicle Ban May Block 10 Lakh NCR Vehicles

Delhi’s BS6 vehicle ban will restrict the entry of vehicles registered outside the capital that do not meet BS6 emission standards from November 1, 2026, potentially affecting more than 10 lakh vehicles in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad during the winter pollution season.

The restriction will remain in force until January 31, 2027, under Delhi’s winter pollution control plan, according to transport department estimates reported by The Times of India. Electric and CNG vehicles will be exempted.

Gurgaon and Faridabad together have nearly two lakh vehicles below BS6 standards, with about 70% classified as BS3 and BS4 vehicles. Around 50,000 commercial vehicles in the two Haryana districts are also estimated to fall below the required standard.

In Noida and Greater Noida, more than four lakh vehicles do not meet BS6 requirements, with BS4 vehicles making up over half of the total. These vehicles are predominantly petrol cars, according to the report. Ghaziabad has about four lakh vehicles below BS6 standards, a senior transport department official told The Times of India.

The restriction applies specifically to vehicles registered outside Delhi. It could affect vehicle owners who regularly travel from neighbouring NCR cities into the capital for work, trade, education, healthcare and other daily activities. The supplied report does not specify whether any separate exemptions will apply to particular categories of non-BS6 vehicles beyond electric and CNG vehicles.

Authorities are preparing tighter checks at Delhi’s entry points. Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras are being deployed at border checkpoints and strategic lanes to read registration plates and help identify vehicles entering the capital. Officials also said AI-powered cameras would support enforcement.

Physical arrangements are being strengthened at entry points connected to Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad, where officials may stop vehicles that do not meet the required emission standard. Around 300 personnel from transport department enforcement teams are expected to be deployed for the operation.

BS6 is India’s latest and most stringent vehicle emission standard. The country’s formal vehicle emission framework began with India 2000, equivalent to Euro 1, in 2000, and subsequently moved through BS2, BS3 and BS4 before transitioning to BS6.

The restrictions are being introduced ahead of Delhi’s winter pollution period, when air quality in the capital typically deteriorates. The transport department’s estimates indicate that enforcement will operate across a regional vehicle network rather than only within Delhi’s registered vehicle fleet. The entry restrictions are scheduled to begin on November 1, 2026.
