Delhi School Safety Probe Begins After Student’s Death

Delhi school safety has come under scrutiny after the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights sought an action-taken report from education and police authorities following the death of a 17-year-old Class 12 student inside a government school in Krishna Nagar, east Delhi.

The student was found severely injured near the guard room at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya on Saturday. She was taken to Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, according to the report. The circumstances of the death are being investigated by the police.

The DCPCR has directed the Director of Education, the school principal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the North-East district and the Station House Officer of Krishna Nagar police station to submit details of the action taken within two weeks of receiving the order.

The commission took suo motu cognisance of the incident after reports said the student had allegedly brought a bottle containing petrol and a note to the school in her bag. Police have reportedly recovered the bottle and a three-page note and are examining both as part of the investigation. The commission said that if the details reported in the media are correct, the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of children inside the school premises.

Police are examining CCTV footage and questioning teachers and other school staff to establish how the student was able to bring the substance into the campus and what happened before she was found near the guard room. The investigation is also examining the possible circumstances preceding the death. No final cause has been established in the material available from the report.

The student’s family has questioned the suicide theory and alleged negligence by school staff, according to the report. These claims remain part of the ongoing investigation and have not been established by an official finding cited in the supplied material.

The DCPCR’s intervention places the incident within the responsibilities of multiple institutions. The education authorities and the school administration are expected to explain the safety and supervision arrangements on campus, while the police are investigating the death and reviewing available evidence. The commission’s order seeks a documented response rather than only an account of the incident.

The case also raises an immediate operational question for schools: how campus entry controls, staff supervision and emergency response function during the school day. The supplied report does not establish whether existing safety protocols were followed or whether any prior warning signs had been recorded. Those questions may be addressed in the reports sought by the commission.

The next formal milestone is the submission of the action-taken reports by the education and police authorities, along with the school principal, within two weeks of the DCPCR order. The police investigation, including the examination of CCTV footage, staff statements and the recovered note, is continuing.
