A major accident involving an LPG tanker caused significant disruption along Pune’s Katraj-Dehu Road bypass on Sunday morning. The tanker, carrying 21 tonnes of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), overturned near Warje Bridge around 10:30 am, halting traffic for over four hours. Authorities confirmed no injuries but reported extensive traffic jams across service roads, including NDA Road, Karve Road, and Sinhagad Road. The driver reportedly lost control as the vehicle approached the bridge from Chandni Chowk, leading to a crash that saw the cabin cross the median and land on the opposite side.
The incident posed immediate risks, given the hazardous nature of LPG. Emergency measures were promptly initiated, with traffic police, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and fire brigade officials rushing to the scene. Experts examined the tanker and found no leakage, alleviating fears of ignition. However, vehicles were diverted to service lanes as a precaution. Efforts to remove the tanker required multiple heavy-duty cranes and earth movers, with partial road clearance achieved by 1 pm and normalcy restored by 2:30 pm.
This accident highlights ongoing civic challenges in ensuring road safety on high-traffic routes. The Warje stretch, a vital artery connecting Pune to Satara, frequently witnesses heavy vehicular movement.
