Mahim Seafood Plaza Reopens With Koli Food and Women-Led Stalls

Mumbai’s Mahim Seafood Plaza has reopened near Mahim Chowpatty with fish delicacies prepared and sold through stalls operated by women’s self-help groups, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation renews an initiative focused on Koli cuisine, livelihoods and tourism.

The stalls became operational on Saturday, October 24, and will remain open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 pm to 11 pm. The reopening was attended by Yashwant Killedar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena group leader and chairperson of the G North Ward Committee; Marathi actor Kamalakar Satpute; Yogesh Desai, assistant commissioner of the G North Ward; civic officials; and members of the participating women’s self-help groups.

The BMC launched the plaza near Mahim Chowpatty to improve the surroundings of Mumbai’s Koliwadas, promote traditional culinary practices and create livelihood opportunities for women. The facility includes decorative lighting, a selfie point and seating arrangements intended to make it a visitor destination as well as a food market.

The civic body said the plaza offers visitors an opportunity to experience traditional Koli cuisine and culture. According to the BMC, thousands of tourists have visited the facility over the past few years, although the supplied information does not provide a visitor count or details of the plaza’s previous operating schedule.

Women involved in the initiative have received training in fish-based products, with the stated aim of helping them develop business skills and strengthen their economic prospects. The BMC said the programme is intended to support their financial independence while contributing to the local economy through a food and cultural attraction.

Desai appealed to residents to visit the plaza and support Mumbai’s traditional Koli culture and cuisine. The reopening therefore places the civic body’s role beyond the provision of physical infrastructure: it also uses a public setting to support community-linked enterprise and cultural visibility. The supplied report does not specify the number of stalls, the participating self-help groups, the investment in the plaza or the arrangements for waste management and daily maintenance.

The reopening follows another BMC initiative earlier in October to promote local production and livelihoods. The civic body organised a three-day exhibition of khadi and village industries products at its headquarters in association with the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board. That exhibition was inaugurated on October 13 by BMC House Leader Ganesh Khankar in the presence of board chairman Ravindra Sathe, who holds the rank of a Minister of State.

For the Mahim plaza, the next confirmed operational milestone is its scheduled weekly service across four evenings: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 7 pm to 11 pm. The BMC’s stated objectives are to sustain the Koli food and cultural offering, provide a market for trained women’s groups and attract residents and tourists to the facility.
