Mumbai Central Railway’s Revenue Soars 5% Amid Festive Rush

The Mumbai Division of Central Railway (CR) has reported a 4.91% growth in revenue for the April–October 2024 period, primarily driven by enhanced services during the festive season. To meet the increased passenger demand during Diwali and Chhat Puja, CR operated 326 special trains in October 2024, marking a significant 40% rise from the 232 special services run in the same month last year. This proactive approach ensured better connectivity and a smoother travel experience for festive travellers.

Passenger services witnessed a notable boost, with 5,690 mail and express trains running in October 2024, a 2.9% increase from the 5,529 trains operated during the same period last year. These additional services catered to the travel surge and reinforced CR’s reputation for reliability and passenger-centric operations. The Division’s commercial earnings for April–October 2024 rose to ₹4,218.95 crore, compared to ₹4,021.56 crore in the previous year. October alone contributed ₹596.79 crore, reflecting the success of targeted strategies during peak travel periods. Freight operations continued to serve as a financial cornerstone, with cumulative earnings reaching ₹1,465.24 crore, a 1.23% increase from ₹1,447.48 crore last year. In October, the Division handled 1.88 million tons of freight, generating ₹224.40 crore in revenue. This consistent performance underscores the Division’s ability to leverage freight services effectively alongside passenger operations.

Additionally, ticket-checking drives added ₹4.62 crore in October 2024, bringing the cumulative revenue from ticket compliance to ₹49.46 crore for the April–October period. These efforts reflect the Division’s proactive measures to ensure adherence to ticketing norms and maximise earnings. The Mumbai Division’s revenue growth highlights its focus on intensive marketing for passenger and freight services, upgraded amenities, and operational efficiency. As demand peaks during the festive season, these measures have strengthened CR’s financial performance and commitment to customer satisfaction.
