Ahmedabad Water Cut to Hit Five Zones on October 25

Ahmedabad will see reduced water distribution across all five municipal zones on October 25 after fluctuating water levels in the Narmada main canal are expected to limit the supply of raw water to the Kotarpur Water Works, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The reduction could affect more than 6 million residents across several parts of the city.

The AMC said the water level near its head regulator on the Narmada main canal has been fluctuating, creating the possibility that Kotarpur Water Works will not receive sufficient raw water for normal treatment and distribution. The civic body will treat and supply water according to the quantity available at the plant.

As a result, water distribution will be lower than on a normal day in five zones: central, west, north, east and south Ahmedabad. The civic announcement covers a large area rather than a single neighbourhood, with both eastern and western parts of the city expected to experience reduced supply.

In east Ahmedabad, the affected areas include Nikol, Odhav, Naroda, Amraiwadi, India Colony and Vastral. Several localities in central and south Ahmedabad are also expected to see lower water distribution, including Jamalpur, Khadia, Dariyapur, Shahibaug, Asarwa, Behrampura, Narol, Dani Limda and Maninagar.

The western and northern parts of the city listed in the notice include Vasna, Paldi, Navrangpura, Naranpura, Sabarmati, Wadaj and Chandkheda. The report does not specify a uniform duration for the reduction in supply or provide a zone-wise schedule for when distribution will take place.

The immediate operational constraint is at the raw-water stage. Kotarpur Water Works must receive water from the Narmada canal before it can treat and send the supply to the city’s water distribution stations. With the available volume expected to be lower, the treatment and distribution process will be adjusted to match the water reaching the plant.

The scale of the proposed disruption highlights the dependence of a large urban water network on the availability of water at a key intake and treatment facility. Because the same constraint affects supply to distribution stations serving multiple zones, the impact is expected to extend across a wide geographic area of Ahmedabad rather than remain confined to the canal-side or plant-adjacent areas.

The AMC has appealed to residents to take note of the reduction planned for October 25 and use available water carefully. The civic body said supply will be reduced according to the quantity of raw water available at Kotarpur Water Works.
