Sattur House Wall Collapse Kills Class XII Student During Heavy Rain

A 17-year-old Class XII student was killed and her mother injured after a wall inside their house collapsed during heavy rain near Sattur in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Thursday night, according to a report citing police sources.

The victim, identified as Muthuselvi, was studying at the Government Higher Secondary School in Chinnakamanpatti and lived with her family in Mettamalai near Sattur. Several parts of Virudhunagar district experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday, with Sattur and nearby areas receiving intense rain for more than two hours, the report said.

The wall in the middle portion of the family’s house collapsed at around 11pm while the occupants were asleep. Muthuselvi was trapped under the debris and suffered severe injuries. Her mother, Solaiammal, sustained a fracture in her leg.

Neighbours responded after the collapse and shifted both women to the Government Hospital in Sattur. Muthuselvi died from her injuries on Friday morning despite treatment, while Solaiammal remains under medical care.

The incident highlights the immediate risk that heavy rainfall can pose to homes with vulnerable walls and structures, particularly when residents are unable to identify or address weaknesses before extreme weather. The supplied report does not provide details about the age, construction condition or ownership status of the house.

Sattur Town police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. Further details about the investigation or any assessment of the collapsed structure were not provided in the report.
