Chennai Monsoon Works Get Urgent Push as Mayor Inspects Drains

Chennai Mayor R Priya inspected monsoon preparedness works across the Greater Chennai Corporation limits on Wednesday, reviewing rainwater removal, storm-water drain construction and canal maintenance in areas affected by widespread rainfall. She also inaugurated a new ward office in Kottivakkam and reviewed several civic infrastructure projects.

The inspections took place in the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone, beginning at Perambur Subway, where the mayor reviewed ongoing rainwater removal operations. She then visited Stephenson Road near the Sengai Sivam Bridge to check whether water was flowing without obstruction through the Otteri Nullah Canal.

Priya also inspected the Gandhi Canal in Ward 72 and reviewed storm-water drain construction and maintenance works on Powder Mills Road in the Basin Bridge area. Officials were instructed to expedite the storm-water drain works around Basin Bridge and continuously monitor canals and drains across Chennai to prevent blockages during the northeast monsoon.

At Ripon Building, the mayor reviewed monitoring activities related to the city’s rain response. She directed officers to act immediately on grievances received from the public, placing complaint redressal alongside field inspections and drainage maintenance in the Corporation’s response.

Priya later inspected rainwater removal work in stagnant areas of AGS Colony with South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian. The visit covered locations where accumulated rainwater had required municipal intervention following the rainfall across Corporation areas.

The mayor and the MP also inaugurated a ward office building in Ward 181 at Kottivakkam. The facility was built at a cost of Rs 97.98 lakh and was opened for public use. Ward offices provide a local point of access for residents seeking municipal services and raising civic complaints.

In Kotturpuram, Priya laid the foundation stone for a compound wall at a Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board residential site. The wall is estimated to cost Rs 23.10 lakh. The visit also included an inspection of a newly constructed community hall on CP Ramaswamy Road.

The community hall was built at a cost of Rs 7.97 crore. Of this, Rs 5.50 crore was provided from the South Chennai MP’s fund and Rs 2.47 crore from the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Capital Fund. The projects inspected during the visit combined immediate monsoon operations with longer-term civic facilities and ward-level public infrastructure.

The Corporation’s directions during the inspection focused on maintaining unobstructed water flow, accelerating pending storm-water drain works, monitoring canals and drains, and responding promptly to public complaints as rainfall continues across Chennai.
