The Old Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover carriageway towards Vasant Vihar has been temporarily closed after cracks were detected at two locations, disrupting a key route between Indira Gandhi International Airport, South Delhi and Gurugram. The closure is expected to remain in place until October 26, subject to repairs and a safety clearance.
The Delhi Traffic Police said the cracks were noticed by traffic personnel, after which the matter was immediately reported to the Public Works Department (PWD). The affected carriageway was closed as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents or injuries to commuters, according to a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer.
The flyover is an important link for motorists travelling from the airport towards Vasant Vihar and other parts of South Delhi. It is also used by commuters arriving from Gurugram and continuing towards South Delhi, Noida and other cities in the National Capital Region.
Traffic snarls were reported after the closure, with motorists diverted onto the adjoining service road. The diversion is expected to add travel time for vehicles using the airport-South Delhi corridor, particularly during busy periods. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow instructions issued by traffic personnel deployed in the area.
PWD officials and the Delhi Traffic Police are carrying out repair work simultaneously at both affected locations, officials said. The work is aimed at restoring the flyover for safe movement of traffic at the earliest. The carriageway will be reopened only after the repair work is completed and the required safety clearance is obtained.
The traffic police has updated Google Maps to show the diversion through the service road and mark the flyover as closed. Commuters using the route have been asked to account for additional travel time and follow the temporary traffic arrangements until the flyover is declared safe for use.
For traffic-related assistance, commuters can contact the Delhi Traffic Police helpline at 1095. The expected repair completion date is October 26, after which officials will assess the flyover before deciding on its reopening.
