Potential Cyclone Threat Puts Andhra-Odisha Coast on Alert

A weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a cyclone and cross the coast between north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha by the end of October, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle. The system is currently being monitored as it develops, with its exact path and intensity expected to become clearer over the next two days.

An upper-air circulation is active over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the north Tamil Nadu coast. The circulation extends up to 5.8 kilometres above mean sea level and is expected to bring heavy rain to isolated parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next three days.

Other areas in the region may receive light to moderate showers and thundershowers during the same period. The developing system could therefore affect road travel, local drainage and other exposed urban infrastructure in coastal districts, although the report does not specify any current disruption or evacuation measures.

Weather models cited in the report indicate that a low-pressure area could form over the Andaman region around October 24 or 25 as a result of the circulation. The system is then expected to intensify into a depression by October 27 while moving towards the central Bay of Bengal.

Within two days of reaching the depression stage, the system could strengthen further into a cyclone. Forecasters have indicated that the potential landfall zone may lie between north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha towards the end of the month. The forecast remains subject to change as the system develops and moves across the bay.

The developing weather event has particular relevance for coastal settlements, where heavy rainfall and strong winds can affect transport links, power infrastructure, drainage networks and low-lying neighbourhoods. No specific impacts on cities, ports, highways or public services have been confirmed in the supplied report.

Officials are monitoring the progression of the disturbance, while forecasters are expected to provide clearer information on its track and intensity over the next two days. The next key developments will be the possible formation of the low-pressure area around October 24 or 25, its expected intensification by October 27 and any subsequent coastal warning issued for Andhra Pradesh or Odisha.
