RGIA X Account Restored After Brief Hack, Airport Services Unaffected

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport’s official X account was briefly hacked on Monday, but GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) said the account was promptly restored and that airport operations, passenger services and critical systems were not affected.

In a statement, GHIAL said unauthorised access to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) account in Shamshabad was detected and addressed by its IT team. The account was restored and made fully operational after the breach.

During the incident, posts promoting a cryptocurrency-related rewards programme reportedly appeared on the airport’s X account for a brief period. GHIAL said the incident had been reported to the relevant cybercrime authorities and to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The airport operator said a detailed investigation into the unauthorised access was underway. It did not provide further details on how the account was compromised or whether any user credentials or other information had been accessed.

GHIAL clarified that the airport’s X account was not integrated with its operational systems. This separation meant the breach did not affect airport operations, passenger services or other critical systems, according to the company.

The incident highlights the distinction between a public-facing digital communication account and the technology systems used to manage airport operations. For passengers, the account’s restoration means RGIA’s official social-media channel is operational again, but the airport operator’s investigation and coordination with cybercrime authorities and X will determine the full scope of the breach.

GHIAL has not announced any disruption to flights, terminal services or other airport functions. The operator said the investigation was continuing after the account was restored.
