Mysuru Reopens Sayyajirao Road Subway With CCTV Security

Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has reopened the Sayyajirao Road pedestrian subway after a safety review, restoring a dedicated crossing facility on one of the city’s busiest roads and adding CCTV cameras, artwork and waste bins.

The subway, built nearly a decade ago, had remained closed because of safety concerns. It was opened temporarily during Dasara in 2025, but was not available for regular public use until MCC commissioner MK Savita inspected the facility and reviewed the safety measures before its latest reopening.

Sayyajirao Road carries heavy vehicular traffic, particularly during Mysuru Dasara and other major public events. The road is also used by residents, shoppers and visitors accessing the Devaraja Market area, making pedestrian crossings more difficult when traffic volumes rise.

According to the civic body, the reopened subway is intended to provide a safer alternative to crossing the road at surface level. MCC expects the facility to improve pedestrian movement, reduce the risk of accidents and support smoother traffic flow along the corridor.

The reopening includes an aesthetic makeover, with artwork installed on the interior walls. CCTV cameras have also been fitted to strengthen security inside the subway, while waste bins have been provided to support cleanliness and maintenance.

The facility is expected to be particularly useful during festivals and public events, when increased pedestrian and vehicle movement can place additional pressure on road crossings. The civic body has appealed to citizens to use the subway instead of crossing Sayyajirao Road directly.

MCC has also urged users to keep the facility clean and protect the artwork, CCTV equipment and other amenities. The reopening follows the commissioner’s safety inspection and places responsibility for continued upkeep partly on regular users of the public facility.
