As Delhi continues to wrestle with its perennial pollution problem, certain areas in east Delhi are emerging as significant contributors to the city’s worsening air quality. One such dust hotspot lies under the Pushta flyover, near Geeta Colony Shamshan Ghat and close to Netaji Subhas University of Technology’s east campus. This location has been plagued by massive heaps of construction debris for an extended period, with little success in managing or clearing the mounting waste. Despite the efforts of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) trucks, the sheer volume of debris poses a persistent and growing threat to the city’s air quality.
The debris not only contributes to rising dust levels but also poses social and health challenges for nearby slum dwellers. Many residents scavenge through the waste to find fuel for cooking, while children sift through the rubble in search of playthings. A particularly hazardous practice observed is the burning of plastic wires to extract copper, a process that releases harmful toxins into the air and is strictly illegal. Such activities exacerbate pollution levels and endanger the health of those involved, especially the vulnerable populations in close proximity.
Adding to the hazards, large piles of debris are now obstructing pavements and roads around the flyover, creating significant challenges for bikers and motorists. These obstacles disrupt traffic flow and contribute to the unsafe conditions on the roads, heightening the risk of accidents. The accumulation of construction waste is a reflection of broader urban management issues, as the city struggles to cope with the rapid pace of urbanisation and the accompanying infrastructure demands.
This situation highlights the urgent need for sustainable waste management solutions. Effective recycling of construction waste, improved urban planning, and community engagement are essential to tackling the dust pollution crisis. By implementing sustainable practices in construction and waste disposal, Delhi can reduce its air quality concerns while fostering a healthier living environment for its citizens.
