In a move aimed at boosting infrastructure development and improving the quality of life for residents in Mumbai and Thane, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved a series of major projects. These initiatives, which collectively involve an investment of over ₹50,000 crore, are expected to transform the region and drive economic growth. One of the key projects approved by the cabinet is the Orange Gate to Marine Drive tunnel, which will provide a crucial link between South Mumbai and the western suburbs.
The government has allocated ₹1,354.66 crore to expedite the project, including interest-free loan assistance to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Another significant project is the Thane Ring Metro Rail, which will provide a much-needed boost to public transportation in the Thane region. The cabinet has approved a revised budget of ₹12,220 crore for the project, which will span 29 kilometers and include 20 elevated stations and two underground stations. The Borivali underground highway, a six-lane project connecting Thane and Borivali, has also been given the green light by the cabinet. The project, which will be 11.85 kilometers long, is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.
In addition to these transportation projects, the cabinet has approved the construction of the Murbe multipurpose port in Palghar district. This project is expected to create 1,500 jobs and boost the local economy. To address the housing needs of project-affected individuals, the cabinet has approved an affordable rental housing scheme for eligible slum dwellers in Dharavi. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) will conduct a slum survey to identify eligible residents and assess the land requirements for the scheme. The cabinet has also taken steps to expedite the slum rehabilitation scheme in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamrajnagar.
By providing a concession on land premiums, the government aims to encourage developers to participate in the project and ensure that residents have access to affordable housing. The Maharashtra government’s decision to invest in these major infrastructure projects demonstrates its commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens and driving economic growth. These initiatives are expected to have a lasting impact on the region and position Mumbai and Thane as major economic hubs in India.
