The new Integrated Terminal building, T-2, of the Chennai International Airport is set to showcase the splendour of ancient Tamil culture while incorporating the latest advanced technology. The terminal spans an area of 1,36,295 sq m. It increases the airport’s passenger serving capacity from 23 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 30 mppa, making it a significant addition to the city’s infrastructure.
One of the terminal’s unique features is the skylight which enables natural light to illuminate the space inside the building. The terminal’s design is a striking reflection of local Tamil culture, incorporating traditional features such as the Kolam (a pattern or design drawn in front of South Indian homes), sarees, temples and other elements that highlight natural surroundings.
The terminal’s construction and design team sought inspiration from the region’s rich cultural heritage, which is evident in the terminal’s modern interpretation of traditional motifs. The terminal’s spacious interiors and innovative design elements provide passengers a comfortable and efficient experience.
The new terminal is also equipped with the latest technological advancements in aviation, including automated baggage handling systems, self-check-in kiosks and smart boarding gates. These advanced technologies will significantly enhance passenger experience and reduce waiting times at the airport.
