BMC’s ₹1,591 Crore Road Concretization Initiative Takes Shape

Mumbai, India – In a bid to revamp its aging road infrastructure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has embarked on a massive road concretization project. The initiative, estimated to cost a staggering ₹1,591 crores, aims to transform the city’s roads, particularly along the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and Western Express Highway (WEH).

The project’s primary objective is to enhance road durability and safety. By replacing traditional asphalt roads with concrete, the BMC seeks to address the perennial issue of potholes and reduce maintenance costs. The concretization process is expected to be completed within two years, significantly improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion. The BMC has already made significant strides in the project. Last year, it awarded contracts worth ₹6,080 crore to five firms for Phase 1, marking the largest civic contract in the city’s history.

Phase 2 is set to allocate an additional ₹6,000 crore for further road work. However, despite the substantial investment, only 30% of the concretization has been completed since the project began in January 2023. To expedite the progress, the BMC has directed road engineers to prioritize the concretization of roads in their respective areas. A detailed list of roads is being compiled, and a monthly schedule is being developed to ensure that the project remains on track post-monsoon. In addition to the main roads, the BMC is also focusing on improving the condition of service roads, slip roads, and junctions along the EEH and WEH.

These auxiliary roads, often overlooked, play a crucial role in traffic flow and accessibility. By concretizing these areas, the BMC aims to enhance the overall road network and reduce congestion. The project is expected to have a long-lasting impact on Mumbai’s infrastructure. By investing in durable and resilient roads, the BMC is not only improving the city’s aesthetics but also enhancing its functionality. The concretization initiative represents a significant step towards a more modern and efficient Mumbai.
