The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is facing requests from airlines to make adjustments to the new terminal at Chennai Airport before shifting all international flights by the end of June. The airlines have requested additional facilities, including check-in counters, immigration counters, flight information boards, signage and aerobridges to prevent congestion during peak hours.
On the departure floor of the terminal, the airlines have asked for four additional check-in counters on each island, a floor-mounted flight information system near entry gates, and two domestic-to-international transfer desk counters. Officials have also requested the replacement of flimsy side railings near the staircase to the departure gates.
The shift of all international flights to the new terminal is part of AAI’s ongoing efforts to modernise Indian airports and improve the overall travel experience for passengers. The new terminal is expected to provide a major boost to Chennai airport’s capacity, as well as to the region’s economy.
However, it remains to be seen how quickly AAI can make the necessary adjustments to the new terminal and shift all international flights. Passengers should expect some disruption during the transition, but ultimately, the new terminal should provide a much-improved experience for all travellers passing through Chennai Airport.
