In an effort to combat Delhi’s rising pollution levels, the Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) has initiated a ‘Dust-Free Delhi Drive,’ directing multiple government agencies to clear the capital’s roads of dust and accumulated silt. The drive, which spans 10 days, involves the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Public Works Department (PWD), the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and other key departments. The goal is to mitigate the growing pollution problem as the winter season approaches. During a review meeting on 20 September, the L-G urged agencies to clear the city’s roads of dust and silt, advising them to convert this 10-day drive into a year-long campaign for sustained impact.
The campaign targets two major sources of pollution: dust from roads and silt deposits left by the monsoons. Road-owning agencies like the MCD and PWD are tasked with removing this debris and transporting it to designated dumping sites. The L-G stressed the importance of continuing these efforts even during rainfall to prevent silt from washing into drains and causing blockages. Additionally, the MCD, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FCD) have been instructed to coordinate cleaning efforts to ensure that mud and silt are properly disposed of. These actions are crucial in keeping the city’s drainage systems functional while reducing dust that would otherwise exacerbate air pollution during the dry months.
The upcoming Winter Action Plan by the Delhi government, which addresses high pollution levels during winter, is set to launch on 25 September. According to the Environment Minister, the plan, initially scheduled for a later date, has been expedited to avoid a clash with the Assembly session. The Winter Action Plan will involve over 33 departments working in unison to reduce pollution levels in the capital. The minister emphasised that a detailed strategy is in place, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.
From a sustainability perspective, this dust-free initiative highlights the importance of long-term, systematic approaches to urban air quality. Regular road cleaning and proactive silt removal not only improve public health by reducing airborne particles but also contribute to creating a more sustainable urban environment.
