Bengaluru Airport Road Gets ₹35-Crore Sadahalli Underpass

The National Highways Authority of India has begun work on a 750-metre, six-lane underpass at Sadahalli Junction on Ballari Road, a key route to Kempegowda International Airport, in a project intended to remove the last traffic signal on the main carriageway. NHAI expects the ₹35-crore project to be completed by mid-2027.

The underpass is being built at the junction to allow airport-bound traffic to pass without stopping at the signal. Motorists travelling from Sadahalli and nearby localities towards Bengaluru city or Devanahalli will also be able to use the crossing, according to details released about the project.

Traffic police said no diversions had been imposed at Sadahalli Junction so far. An officer said NHAI had informed the department that construction would be taken up in phases because of the high volume of traffic on the route.

The work is part of ongoing interventions along the airport road, where construction activity has to be coordinated with existing traffic and nearby facilities. NHAI has also provided an update on cut-and-cover works for a service road near the Indian Air Force station in Yelahanka.

The first phase of that service-road project, covering the initial 240-metre stretch between IAF Gates 1 and 2, has been completed along with associated utility and compound works. The second phase, covering the stretch between Gates 2 and 3, is in progress and is targeted for completion by December 2026.

NHAI said cut-and-cover work for the service road near the IAF station would begin after the Aero India show in February 2027. The timing is intended to sequence the works around the event, while construction near the IAF area continues in phases.

On the domestic side of the airport, the service-road stretch between Gates 5 and 6 will be taken up after the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation hands over encumbrance-free land, according to NHAI. The agency has not indicated any immediate traffic diversion at Sadahalli Junction, while the underpass construction proceeds in phases towards the mid-2027 completion target.
