Thane civic committees that have remained pending must be constituted at the earliest and within eight weeks, following a direction from the Bombay High Court in a petition challenging the delay in completing the process, according to a report by Mid-Day.
The order covers the appointment of nominated corporators, members of the transport committee, the standing committee and other important committees of the Thane Municipal Corporation. Their formation had remained pending, prompting Advocate Sagar Kadam to approach the court seeking intervention.
The committees are part of the municipal corporation’s institutional framework. The standing committee is among the civic body’s key decision-making and scrutiny mechanisms, while the transport committee deals with matters connected to civic transport. The appointment of nominated corporators and the constitution of other panels are also part of the municipal governance process.
The delay had raised concerns over the functioning of the committee system, which is involved in policy decisions and scrutiny of municipal affairs. With the court allowing the petition and setting an eight-week timeline, the civic administration and the authorities concerned will now have to complete the pending appointments and committee formations within the stipulated period.
Kadam said the legal intervention was intended to ensure that the democratic and administrative processes within the Thane Municipal Corporation were not kept pending indefinitely. “The purpose of approaching the High Court was to ensure that the democratic and administrative processes within the Thane Municipal Corporation move forward without unnecessary delay,” he said, according to Mid-Day.
“The court has allowed our petition and directed that the committees be constituted at the earliest within eight weeks. We hope that the directions will be implemented within the stipulated time,” Kadam added. Senior advocate Sanjeev Kadam and advocate Sachin Pawar represented the petitioners during the proceedings.
The court’s direction places a defined deadline on the pending process and makes the constitution of the committees the immediate administrative task for the Thane civic authorities. The next milestone will be completion of the appointments and formation of the panels within eight weeks.
