The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA) team has intensified its efforts in addressing illegal constructions within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. As of September 11, HYDRA has successfully demolished 262 unauthorised structures across 26 locations, reclaiming a total of 111.72 acres of land. This aggressive action underscores the agency’s commitment to curbing encroachments and restoring public land.
The latest report from HYDRA reveals that the most significant demolition activity occurred near Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur, where 42 structures were removed. This was followed by 24 demolitions near Pedda Cheruvu in Ameenpur, 14 structures at Appa Cheruvu in Gaganpahad, and 13 at Kathwa Lake in Dungidal municipality. Notably, demolitions also included properties in high-profile areas such as Tummidikunta Lake in Madhapur, including the N-Convention centre owned by actor Nagarjuna, which reclaimed 4.9 acres of land. HYDRA’s operations began on June 27 with the demolition of illegal constructions at Plot No 30 (Lotus Pond) in Film Nagar Cooperative Society. The initiative has targeted various unauthorised structures, including those linked to political figures and business interests. Despite the ongoing demolitions, HYDRA has assured the public that occupied residential properties are exempt from these actions, focusing instead on unoccupied and illegally constructed buildings.
In response to growing concerns, the Telangana State government is set to enhance HYDRA’s regulatory powers. New regulations will soon require builders to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from HYDRA for constructions near water bodies and flood-prone areas. This move aims to enforce stricter compliance with environmental and zoning regulations and to protect buffer zones from encroachments amid the city’s rapid urban expansion. Details on the scope of these new regulations and affected areas will be announced shortly. Builders and developers are advised to consult with HYDRA before commencing new projects to ensure adherence to the updated guidelines and to avoid potential legal challenges.
