Coastal Road’s Pothole Problem Sparks Outrage

Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road project, a symbol of modern infrastructure, has recently come under scrutiny following complaints about its condition. Motorists and civic activists have voiced concerns over the quality of the newly opened stretch between Mahalaxmi and Worli, pointing to visible potholes and uneven patches. This discontent has been magnified by a viral social media video, sparking widespread criticism and calls for accountability.

The Coastal Road project, a significant undertaking valued at ₹13,983 crore, began in October 2018. After numerous delays, the first phase between Worli and Nariman Point was inaugurated in March 2024, with the second phase becoming operational in July. The ongoing connector work linking the Coastal Road to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is nearing completion. However, the road’s initial performance has been less than stellar. Motorists have reported a bumpy experience, which has raised questions about the quality of construction. Social media user @EternalDrift highlighted these issues with a video and photos, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of taxpayer funds and demanding rigorous investigations and accountability.

A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official explained that the observed issues are partly due to the timing of the asphalt laying. Typically, asphalt is applied during the dry season to allow proper curing. Unfortunately, the northbound stretch was asphalted just before the monsoon, leaving it vulnerable to heavy rainfall and insufficient curing time. To mitigate these problems, mastic asphalt was applied as a temporary measure to prevent pothole formation during the rains. The official assured that a fresh layer of asphalt will be applied to the affected patches once the monsoon season concludes. The situation underscores a broader challenge in infrastructure development, where timely execution and weather conditions can significantly impact the quality of work. As the Coastal Road project continues, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these issues are addressed and whether the road can deliver on its promise of enhanced connectivity and smoother travel.
