The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for isolated parts of Mumbai and Raigad, with hot and humid conditions expected across sections of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the Konkan belt until October 12. The warning follows the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Maharashtra and a forecast rise in temperatures over the next few days.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai said isolated pockets of Mumbai and Raigad were likely to experience heatwave conditions on Friday, October 9. It also forecast hot and humid weather at isolated locations in North Konkan, while parts of South Konkan could experience heatwave conditions.
The IMD expects maximum temperatures to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in some parts of Maharashtra over the next 48 hours. Temperatures could increase by another 1 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter, according to the weather information cited in the report. Maximum temperatures in parts of interior Maharashtra are likely to remain between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius on October 9 and 10.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region includes Mumbai and adjoining areas in Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts. The urban agglomeration extends across nine municipal corporations, meaning that a regional weather warning can affect residents, commuters and outdoor workers across multiple municipal jurisdictions even when conditions vary between locations.
The alert is the first heatwave warning issued for Mumbai and some other parts of Maharashtra in the current episode, according to the report. The expected combination of high temperatures and humidity could increase discomfort, particularly in areas where hot conditions persist through the day. The IMD has distinguished between the expected conditions in different parts of the Konkan region rather than issuing a uniform forecast for the entire coastal belt.
Residents have been advised to follow official weather updates, drink sufficient water and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. These precautions are particularly relevant for people who work outdoors, travel during peak afternoon hours or live in neighbourhoods with limited access to shaded public spaces and cooling facilities.
The weather department has also forecast light rain and thundershowers in parts of southern Maharashtra during the afternoon or evening over the weekend. The IMD’s warning for the Mumbai region and Konkan remains in force until October 12, with local conditions expected to vary across districts and isolated pockets.
