Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its scrutiny of alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with a particular focus on a purported biomedical waste scam. Recent findings have linked the investigation to previous complaints concerning the mishandling of biomedical waste at the facility. Documents related to an earlier inquiry into the disposal practices of biomedical waste have surfaced, prompting further examination.
The inquiry, conducted between 2022 and 2023, revealed improper disposal of biomedical waste and highlighted several key individuals. Among those identified were a worker from the hospital’s common collection plant and a caretaker from a guest house on the premises. Notably, the worker provided information implicating a security guard, who was reportedly connected to the former principal of the hospital. This security guard allegedly facilitated illicit transactions involving biomedical waste.
Biomedical waste, including used syringes, gloves, and saline bottles, poses significant recycling value when processed correctly. However, discrepancies in waste management practices have raised concerns. The CBI’s investigation has uncovered connections with two out-of-state recycling firms and their transporters, who are expected to be questioned. A firm responsible for waste transport had previously reported a decline in the volume of waste collected, an anomaly flagged by the inquiry committee.
The CBI’s probe into RG Kar Hospital follows orders from the Calcutta High Court, which also instructed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate related corruption allegations. On Sunday, the CBI team conducted a visit to the hospital as part of its ongoing investigation. The case underscores the growing vigilance over transparency and accountability in managing biomedical waste, a critical issue for public health and institutional integrity. the CBI’s investigation into RG Kar Hospital’s biomedical waste management has brought to light serious allegations of corruption and mismanagement. As the inquiry progresses, the focus remains on uncovering the full extent of the scandal and ensuring that those involved are held accountable.
