The local authorities have announced a major expansion of the city’s surveillance system. The plan involves the installation of 2,000 new high-resolution CCTV cameras across various locations including internal roads, sector entry and exit points, and parks.
This addition will bolster the existing network of approximately 2,100 cameras, which currently comprises around 1,100 dedicated to surveillance and the remainder integrated into the city’s traffic management system. The new cameras will be strategically positioned along V3 and V4 roads, which include sector perimeters and internal sector roads respectively, as well as V5 and V6 roads which cover sector circulation and access routes. Additionally, cameras will be installed in parks identified as hotspots for incidents such as snatching and eve-teasing. These high-definition cameras will be linked with the Integrated Control Command Centre (ICCC), allowing for real-time monitoring and high-quality image capture, including vehicle number plates and clear identification of individuals.
This expansion aims to address security concerns and improve crime-solving capabilities. The existing CCTV network has already demonstrated its efficacy, aiding in the resolution of numerous cases, including murder, snatching, road accidents, and thefts over the past two years. According to data from Chandigarh Smart City Limited, the current system contributed to solving 250 criminal cases between March 2022 and February 2023. With the integration of the new cameras, the city expects to further enhance its surveillance capabilities and continue its efforts to ensure public safety.
