The Jagatpura-Kandala road, in particular, stands out as a stark example of the region’s infrastructure issues, with its deplorable state exacerbated by the recent downpours. This stretch, along with other problem areas such as roads in Nayagaon and near Kharar’s main market, has become a significant source of distress for local commuters.
Former Cabinet Minister and MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu has strongly criticised the state of the roads, warning that the Congress party is prepared to lead a concerted protest if repairs are not undertaken immediately. Sidhu’s comments follow his firsthand inspection of the Jagatpura-Kandala road, a one-and-a-half kilometre stretch plagued by severe potholes that have remained unaddressed. Despite the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s earlier promises to resurface the road, the surface remains in disrepair, prompting local residents to take matters into their own hands. Youth from Kandala village have been filling the potholes using their own resources, reflecting the community’s frustration with the government’s inaction.
The recent rains have further worsened the situation, turning the road into a hazardous and nearly impassable route for people from several surrounding villages. Sidhu has pointed out that the government’s apparent indifference to these infrastructure challenges is causing significant hardship for residents. As the monsoon season continues, the urgency for immediate and effective repairs is becoming increasingly critical. The situation highlights a pressing need for governmental accountability and action to address the infrastructural shortcomings plaguing Mohali.
