The Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) has breathed new life into a long-standing proposal to develop three integrated townships in Bengaluru’s suburbs. This ambitious plan, initially conceived nearly two decades ago, aims to create self-sustained urban clusters in Bidadi, Solur near Magadi, and Nandagudi in Hoskote. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to alleviate urban congestion in Bengaluru while fostering sustainable development in its outskirts.
Steered by the Deputy Chief Minister, who also oversees Bengaluru’s development portfolio, the project is set to begin with the development of Bidadi, chosen as the pilot township. According to officials, Bidadi’s strategic location, intersected by four highways and connected to the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), makes it an ideal starting point for this ambitious venture. The integrated township model envisioned here includes a mix of commercial spaces such as logistics parks and data centres, alongside high-rise residential units, thereby creating a balanced urban ecosystem.
As a precursor to the construction phase, the BMRDA has taken several preparatory steps. It has reached out to Namma Metro to conduct a feasibility study for extending metro connectivity to these burgeoning regions, thereby ensuring that the townships are well-integrated with the city’s public transport network. Additionally, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has been tasked with planning the necessary infrastructure for a reliable supply of potable water to these new settlements.
The BMRDA has also approached the state government for approval to notify a substantial parcel of land for acquisition. Concurrently, the Bengaluru Urban district administration will undertake a comprehensive social impact assessment study to gauge the potential effects of the project on local communities. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is also in the pipeline to outline the technical and financial specifics of the initiative. Solur and Nandagudi were chosen for their strategic locations and connectivity advantages. Solur’s proximity to Nelamangala and Bengaluru makes it a promising candidate for development, while Nandagudi is positioned along the under-construction Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, providing a direct link to a major economic corridor.
