The Telangana government will complete recruitment to 4,538 posts in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said, as the state seeks to reduce the workload on existing employees and strengthen its public bus system.
Prabhakar made the announcement during a video conference with Congress leaders ahead of the TGSRTC union elections. He said the government had cleared several long-pending financial and service-related issues affecting employees and was taking steps to expand the corporation’s workforce.
The minister said the recruitment process for the 4,538 posts would be completed soon. The announcement did not specify the individual categories of posts, the recruitment examination schedule, or the expected date of joining. Those details will determine how quickly the additional staffing reaches depots and operational units.
TGSRTC employees are now receiving their salaries on the first day of every month, Prabhakar said. He attributed the change to the merger of the corporation with the state government. The government had also cleared the pending 2017 Pay Revision Commission dues and outstanding dearness allowance payments soon after coming to power, according to the minister.
Prabhakar said pending bonds from 2013 had also been cleared. He cited progress on employee-related statutory and institutional dues, saying provident fund arrears had been reduced from ₹1,205 crore to ₹600 crore. Cooperative Credit Society dues had declined from ₹690 crore to ₹300 crore, he said.
The government is paying ₹75 crore every month towards provident fund and Cooperative Credit Society dues, according to the minister. These payments are separate from the proposed recruitment and form part of the government’s effort to address the corporation’s accumulated employee liabilities.
The minister also said the government had taken up 1,134 long-pending compassionate appointments. Around 250 employees who had been permanently removed from service by the previous government for various reasons had so far been reinstated, he added. The announcement did not provide a schedule for completing the remaining compassionate appointments or details of the reinstatement cases.
The staffing decision comes as TGSRTC remains a key public transport provider for Telangana’s cities, towns and intercity routes. Additional personnel could ease pressure on existing employees, but the operational effect will depend on how the posts are distributed among depots and departments and when the appointments are completed.
Prabhakar asked Congress leaders to coordinate with TGSRTC depot presidents and secretaries and to work across depots during the union elections. The minister’s announcement did not provide further details on the recruitment notification, department-wise allocation or the implementation timetable.
