Delhi Gets Rs 1,789-Crore AI Traffic System for Faster Roads

Delhi will get a Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System featuring AI-enabled signals, real-time congestion monitoring, automated enforcement and priority movement for ambulances, after approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday.

The project, chaired through the CCEA and implemented by Delhi Police, will cover 42 identified traffic corridors and be rolled out in three phases over 24 months. The plan includes five years of operation and maintenance after implementation, according to an official statement.

Under the system, traffic signals will be able to adjust timings automatically according to prevailing road conditions. Signals along identified corridors will also be coordinated to reduce stoppages and delays. The platform will detect congestion, slow-moving traffic and road incidents in real time, enabling Delhi Police to respond more quickly.

The project will create priority movement for ambulances and other emergency vehicles through green corridors. Variable message signs and digital platforms will provide commuters with information on congestion, diversions, parking availability and traffic conditions. This information may also be shared with navigation service providers.

The system will strengthen automated enforcement against red-light and stop-line violations, speeding, wrong-way driving, failure to use helmets and seat belts, illegal parking and the use of mobile phones while driving. AI-based analytics will also assist in identifying stolen, hot-listed and blacklisted vehicles, repeat violators and vehicles linked to hit-and-run incidents.

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the use of AI cameras across the city would have an impact on crime rates, citizen safety and traffic movement. A senior police officer said around 2,500 cameras would be installed across the capital with the aim of making Delhi “traffic-snar l free”.

The project will cover 1,092 adaptive traffic control system locations and 1,029 enforcement locations. Traffic regulation, enforcement and the dissemination of traffic information will be integrated through traffic command and control centres, supported by secure data centres and disaster recovery infrastructure.

Delhi has around 71 lakh active registered vehicles, while vehicle growth has substantially outpaced the expansion of road infrastructure, according to the Union government. The project is intended to improve the use of the existing road network through real-time traffic intelligence, quicker incident response and technology-based enforcement.

Delhi Police will implement the system through a master system integrator selected through competitive bidding. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing will provide technical support as project consultant. The approved implementation schedule is 24 months, followed by the planned five-year operation and maintenance period.
