Kolkata Municipal Corporation has launched a special night-time road repair drive across the city ahead of Durga Puja, with the first phase focused on major roads in north and central Kolkata and along the EM Bypass. The civic body aims to complete repairs on priority routes before Mahalaya on October 10, according to a report by Sanmarg – Kolkata.
The campaign began on Monday night through the KMC roads department, after continuous rain left large potholes and damaged stretches across several parts of the city. The road condition has affected traffic movement and created difficulties for residents, particularly on routes expected to carry increased movement during the festival period.
The first repair work was undertaken near Chingrighata on the EM Bypass, where rain had created several large potholes. Work began around midnight and continued for several hours. The night schedule is intended to reduce disruption on busy roads while allowing repair crews to work on damaged stretches with lower traffic volumes.
In north and central Kolkata, repair activity has been reported on Chittaranjan Avenue near Hedua, Raja Nabakrishna Street and the stretch between Beadon Street and Girish Park. Maniktala Main Road has also been identified for repair after being affected by the rain. Other locations where work has started include Lalbazar Street, B.B. Ganguly Street and parts of B.B.D. Bagh, based on citizen complaints and feedback received by the civic administration.
Road improvement work is also under way in and around the central business district, including stretches of Netaji Subhas Road, Fairlie Place and the area surrounding Writers’ Building. A KMC official said the first phase has prioritised roads in north Kolkata, central Kolkata and the EM Bypass. The next phase will focus on roads in south and south-west Kolkata.
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road and parts of Diamond Harbour Road have been included in the repair plan. Other priority routes listed for the drive include Taratala Road, the road near Maa Flyover, Bondel Road, Raja Subodh Malik Road, Cossipore Road and Canal East and Canal West roads.
The Kolkata Traffic Police has shared information about rain-damaged roads with KMC and the Public Works Department. Police have received complaints about poor road conditions in the port area, East Behala and Jadavpur, adding these locations to the wider repair coordination between the civic and public works authorities.
The repair programme leaves KMC with a limited window before Durga Puja to address damage across a wide road network. The civic body’s stated target is to complete work on the identified priority roads before Mahalaya, while the next phase is expected to extend repairs to additional routes in south and south-west Kolkata.
