A stone struck and shattered windows of three coaches on the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express after the train passed Borkhedi station in Maharashtra on Friday night, prompting searches by railway security personnel and the registration of a case against an unknown person. No passenger was injured.
According to Indian Railways, window glass in coaches A-1, B-2 and B-5 was damaged in the incident. Escort staff and passengers told railway officials that an object or stone hit the windows from outside at around 8.27pm, while the train was travelling towards Mumbai.
A video circulating on social media shows five passengers sitting together inside a coach when the window suddenly breaks and glass fragments fly into the compartment. One passenger is heard saying that they were travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai and were having food when the window was struck.
The Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police began a search after receiving information about the incident at around 8.46pm. The operation covered the Borkhedi-Sindhi section between kilometre 803 and 796, along with nearby Borkhedi and Brahmani villages.
Police questioned the Police Patil and local residents during the search. Officials said they did not find a suspicious person or concrete evidence identifying the source of the stone. The exact location from which the object was thrown has not yet been established.
A case, Crime No. 325/2026, was registered against an unknown person at 2.55am on Saturday under Section 153 of the Railway Act. The provision relates to endangering the safety of persons travelling by railway through unlawful acts. Further enquiry is underway.
The incident occurred on a train operating between Nagpur and Mumbai and involved passengers inside moving coaches, although railway officials reported no injuries. Investigators are continuing to examine the Borkhedi-Sindhi stretch and surrounding areas as part of the enquiry.
