In a bid to mitigate the chronic waterlogging problems plaguing Lucknow, the MLA of Sarojini Nagar has urged the Chief Minister to form a dedicated task force under the leadership of the Chief Secretary. The proposal comes at a time when the city’s infrastructure, including schools, offices, airports, hospitals, and major roadways, is frequently compromised by severe waterlogging, which not only hampers daily life but also tarnishes the city’s image as a burgeoning urban centre.
The MLA’s request, formalised through a letter to the Chief Minister, underscores the urgency of addressing waterlogging, which has become a recurring issue with each monsoon season. The proposed committee would be responsible for a comprehensive assessment of the problem, particularly in newly expanded areas of the city, to devise long-term and effective solutions. A central element of the MLA’s proposal is the suggestion to conduct a systematic survey of Lucknow, aimed at developing a detailed “water trail” map. This map would trace the flow of water from various sources, including residential areas and drainage systems, guiding it through a network of tributary drains to appropriate endpoints such as rivers, lakes, ponds, or reservoirs. This strategic mapping could provide a sustainable solution to the waterlogging problem, ensuring that rainwater is effectively managed and redirected.
The MLA also recommended a phased approach to the creation of new lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, emphasising the need to enhance natural water bodies by freeing them from encroachments. Protecting these natural resources is crucial to maintaining the ecological balance and ensuring that the city’s water management infrastructure remains efficient and resilient. Further, the MLA highlighted the importance of re-modelling and correcting the slopes of all water flow-related infrastructure, such as drains and canals, to improve their capacity to handle rainwater. This would involve engineering adjustments to ensure that water is directed efficiently and does not contribute to the waterlogging issues currently afflicting the city.
In addition to these measures, the proposed task force would be responsible for the continuous review and close monitoring of the implementation of these initiatives. By ensuring regular oversight, the committee would aim to maintain momentum and accountability in addressing the waterlogging issue. As Lucknow continues to grow and urbanise, the effective management of water resources will be critical in maintaining its infrastructure and quality of life for residents. The MLA’s proposal, if implemented, could mark a significant step towards achieving these goals and solidifying Lucknow’s reputation as a well-planned and resilient city.
