Residents of Pune Cantonment have been left grappling with a severe flooding crisis, as both rainwater and sewage inundated six homes in the area. The unexpected deluge has not only caused significant property damage but also raised serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of ongoing drainage work.
One local resident recounted the distressing experience, stating, “It wasn’t just rainwater that flooded our house; sewage water mixed in, creating an unbearable stench. The Pune cantonment and Garrison Engineer (South) need to urgently address this problem.” The situation is echoed by six other families who faced similar issues on the same night. They allege that the Garrison Engineers (GE) have neglected to complete crucial drainage line work over the past two years.
A working professional from the affected area added, “I have been persistently pursuing this issue with both the cantonment board and GE authorities for three years without any resolution.” The homes affected are situated on a slope, exacerbating the problem as rainwater and sewage flow downhill from the drainage line and surrounding roads. The approach road to these residences has been severely damaged, leading to additional distress for the residents, who have endured sleepless nights due to the flooding.
The Junior Engineer from GE (South) explained that plans were in place to construct a proper RCC drainage line at the site. However, the onset of rains hindered the commencement of this critical work. The rainwater is reported to be coming from the Old Command Hospital, ALC, and Wanowarie post office, further complicating the drainage issue. Residents have called on the authorities, including the state revenue department, to conduct a spot panchanama to assess the extent of the damage and determine appropriate compensation. The ongoing issues highlight the urgent need for effective drainage solutions and prompt action to mitigate the adverse effects of such floods on the community.
