Delhi Pink Force units could soon be deployed at schools, colleges, metro stations and other sensitive public locations after Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed the Delhi Police to prepare a dedicated patrol unit for women’s safety. The proposal was discussed during a meeting with senior police officials at the police headquarters on Tuesday.
The proposed unit would comprise trained women police personnel and focus on locations and periods where women are considered more vulnerable to harassment and other offences. The deployment is intended to increase the visible presence of police in public spaces and enable quicker action if an incident is reported.
According to the report, Sandhu asked the Delhi Police to identify and train women personnel for the specialised force. The proposed Pink Force would operate alongside the existing policing arrangements in the capital rather than replace them. The report did not specify the number of personnel to be included, the areas selected for the first deployment or a launch date.
The plan is modelled on the Pink Force operated by the Goa Police. The Delhi Lieutenant Governor directed officials to consider the Goa initiative as a reference while developing a women-focused patrol unit suited to the capital’s public spaces. The proposed deployment covers educational institutions, transit points and other locations described as sensitive for women’s safety.
Sandhu said that there could be no negligence or compromise in matters concerning women’s safety and that women should feel safe on every road in Delhi at all times. He also directed the police to continue focused action against harassment and molestation under Operation Shishtachar.
The proposed unit would add a dedicated women-led patrol component to Delhi’s existing response system. Its effectiveness will depend on the police finalising the unit’s structure, training requirements, deployment locations and operating procedures. The report did not provide details on these implementation arrangements.
The next steps are expected to involve the Delhi Police preparing the proposed force and deciding where trained personnel will be deployed. The timing and operational details of the initiative have not yet been announced.
