OneTag, a new FASTag portability facility launched by Union minister Nitin Gadkari, will allow motorists to switch issuer banks without removing the physical tag affixed to their vehicles or changing its Tag ID. The facility was launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai and is intended to simplify how users move between FASTag issuer banks.
Under the existing process, motorists seeking a different issuer generally have to close their current FASTag and complete onboarding again with a new physical tag. OneTag removes the replacement requirement. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that after a successful transfer, the existing Tag ID and the vehicle registration number will remain unchanged.
The facility will be available through the National Highways Authority of India’s Rajmargyatra mobile application. The app will first check whether a user’s FASTag is eligible for portability. Users must then provide consent, complete secure verification and select a preferred issuer bank.
Fresh KYC is required for the switch. According to the ministry’s process, the current issuer bank will send a six-digit Mobile Verification Code to the user. After authorisation, the motorist must complete customer verification, including KYC, and wallet onboarding with the new issuer bank.
Portability does not transfer the balance in the old FASTag wallet to the new bank automatically. The existing issuer will remain responsible for the previous wallet, pending transactions, refunds and other related obligations. Once portability is completed, the old issuer will close the wallet and refund the remaining balance after applicable adjustments, according to the report cited in the source coverage.
The new issuer bank will take responsibility for onboarding and providing FASTag services after the transfer is completed. This separation means that users will need to follow up with the former issuer on matters linked to the old wallet, even though they retain the physical FASTag attached to the vehicle.
The portability facility also has a six-month cooling-off period. A FASTag that has been ported cannot be transferred again until six months have passed.
Security deposits and minimum balance requirements will continue to vary by vehicle class. For cars, jeeps, vans, Tata Ace vehicles and similar mini light commercial vehicles in Class 4, the security deposit is Rs 200 and the minimum balance is nil. For several heavier categories, deposits range from Rs 300 to Rs 500, while minimum balance requirements range from Rs 200 to Rs 500.
The stated vehicle categories include two-axle light commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, tractors with trailers, heavy construction machinery and vehicles with six or more axles. The next steps for users are to check eligibility on the Rajmargyatra app, complete verification and KYC, select the new issuer and finish onboarding before the portability takes effect.
