Three people were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW crashed into a boundary wall and plunged off a bridge on Mumbai’s Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty early on Sunday, according to police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The crash occurred at around 5.20am as the vehicle was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali.
Police said the driver allegedly lost control of the car because of overspeeding. The vehicle first struck a boundary wall before falling from the bridge. An inquiry has been launched to establish the circumstances leading to the crash, including the vehicle’s speed and the actions of those inside it.
Two of the deceased were identified as Shanay Gajjal, 21, and Dhirya Seth, 17. A third victim, an unidentified man aged about 25, was declared brought dead, according to the BMC. The fourth occupant, an unidentified man aged around 20, suffered severe injuries and was admitted to a hospital trauma ward in critical condition.
The crash took place on the Mumbai Coastal Road, a 10.58-kilometre high-speed route connecting Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link. The corridor is designed to carry traffic along Mumbai’s western waterfront and includes elevated sections, bridges and ramps.
The location of the crash near Lotus Jetty places the incident on a key section of the road between south Mumbai and Haji Ali. The incident also highlights the serious consequences of loss of vehicle control on elevated and high-speed urban corridors, where a collision can involve both road barriers and structures beyond the carriageway.
Police have begun their investigation into the crash. Officials are expected to establish the sequence of events, verify the identities of the victims and determine the circumstances under which the BMW crossed the boundary wall and fell from the bridge.
