Three students were killed and another was critically injured after the BMW they were travelling in crashed into the outer wall of Mumbai’s Coastal Road and plunged nearly 75 feet early Sunday morning, according to Tardeo police. The vehicle was travelling from Marine Drive towards the northbound stretch when the crash occurred at around 5 am.
The deceased have been identified as Sanay Gujjar, 21, Aditya Jakasania, 19, and Dhairya Sheth, 17. The injured passenger, Aditya Oswal, 23, is undergoing treatment at Nair Hospital and is in critical condition, police said.
Police said Gujjar, Oswal and Sheth were BBA students at a management college in Vile Parle. Gujjar, who was from Ahmedabad, had been staying in Mumbai as a paying guest. The BMW belonged to Gujjar’s family, according to the police.
Prima facie, investigators suspect that the car was travelling at high speed when Gujjar lost control of the vehicle. The car first struck the outer wall of the Coastal Road before falling nearly 75 feet, police said.
“It appears that the car was travelling at a very high speed. Due to the speed, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car hit the outer wall of the Coastal Road and then fell nearly 75 feet, killing three students and injuring another,” Meena Jagtap, senior inspector of Tardeo police station, was quoted as saying.
The police have informed the families of the deceased and are recording statements from the injured student’s friends and other witnesses. The investigation is continuing, with the circumstances surrounding the crash and the vehicle’s speed being examined by the police.
