Chennai rain is expected to continue over the next few days as a low-pressure area over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining regions is forecast to intensify while moving towards the Bay of Bengal coast, according to the India Meteorological Department forecast reported by the Times of India.
The weather system formed on Saturday evening and is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensifying into a depression over the east-central Bay on September 21 and a deep depression over the west-central Bay on September 22. The system is expected to reach near the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 23.
For Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengelpet, the IMD has forecast moderate rain at a few places from September 20 to 22. From September 23 to 25, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places in the region.
Chennai may receive light to moderate rain on Sunday, September 20, with thunderstorms and lightning possible in some areas during the evening and night. The forecast range for the city is 36°C to 37°C during the day and 26°C to 27°C at night.
The rain activity is being supported by a north-south trough extending from north coastal Andhra Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar across Tamil Nadu at lower levels. Such weather systems can produce changing rainfall patterns across the city and neighbouring districts, making conditions different between localities.
The forecast covers Chennai and three adjoining districts that form a closely connected urban and commuting region. Rain in this corridor can affect travel between the city and its expanding suburban areas, although the supplied forecast does not specify expected rainfall accumulation, waterlogging locations or transport disruptions.
The developing system is also moving towards the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, rather than directly towards Chennai. Even so, the IMD outlook indicates that the city and nearby districts will continue to receive rain during the coming days as the trough and broader Bay of Bengal weather system remain active.
The immediate forecast window extends through September 25. Residents, commuters and local authorities will need to track subsequent IMD updates for changes in rainfall intensity, lightning conditions and the movement of the depression and deep depression.
