Tamil Nadu recorded 283 dengue cases on the 16th, up sharply from 61 on the 14th, prompting the state government to intensify mosquito-control and fever surveillance measures across its health districts. The count declined to 244 on the 17th, but more than 17,000 people have been affected by dengue in the state so far this year, according to Health Minister Arun Raj, as reported by Dinamalar.
The minister said the increase was linked to seasonal changes and told the public that the situation was not at a level requiring widespread alarm. He said the government had strengthened preventive action and appointed coordination officers for each health district to oversee dengue-control measures.
Dengue cases have been reported in other states as well, the minister said. In Tamil Nadu, the department is monitoring fever cases daily and has deployed mosquito-control workers as part of its response. The government has also said that people affected by fever are receiving appropriate treatment and that doctors have been trained to manage such cases.
The latest figures place household and neighbourhood-level prevention at the centre of the state’s strategy. The minister urged residents to ensure that rainwater does not stagnate around homes, as standing water can support the spread of Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dengue.
The instruction also applies to commercial and construction-related premises. Factories and construction companies where rainwater is allowed to collect have been warned, according to the minister. He said fines would be imposed if such premises failed to comply.
The figures underline the connection between seasonal rainfall, water accumulation and the day-to-day responsibilities of local public-health systems. Mosquito-control work, fever surveillance, public messaging and access to treatment are being managed alongside efforts to prevent breeding sites in residential, industrial and construction areas.
Tamil Nadu has reported nine dengue deaths so far this year, the minister said. The health department’s daily monitoring is expected to continue as officials track whether the recent decline from 283 cases on the 16th to 244 on the 17th is sustained.
The state government’s immediate measures are the appointment of health-district coordination officers, intensified mosquito-control work, medical training for doctors and enforcement action against premises where rainwater stagnates. Residents and establishments have been asked to remove such accumulation as part of the ongoing prevention campaign.
