The Tamil Nadu government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Walgreens India Private Limited to establish a global capability centre at DLF Downtown in Taramani, Chennai, with the project expected to create 250 jobs.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay during an event held at the state Secretariat. The Tamil Nadu government said the MoU was executed through its Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department.
The proposed centre will be located in the DLF Downtown campus on Chennai’s newly announced OMR GCC corridor. The agreement describes the facility as Walgreens’ first global capability centre, with provision for expansion in the coming years.
The announcement adds another corporate facility to the Taramani–Old Mahabalipuram Road development belt, an area identified in the government statement as part of Chennai’s emerging global capability centre corridor. GCCs typically bring corporate technology, operations and specialised support functions into urban business districts, linking employment growth with office space, transport access and supporting services.
According to the government’s release, the immediate employment potential associated with the Walgreens centre is 250 jobs. The statement does not provide a project investment value, operational start date, job categories or a detailed implementation schedule.
The location at DLF Downtown places the proposed centre within a large mixed-use commercial development in Taramani. For Chennai, the announcement is significant because the concentration of such facilities can influence demand for office space and increase the need for reliable mobility, power, digital connectivity and civic services along the OMR corridor.
